as we go throughout connecticut, georgia, california, washington state. i mean, it is really a powerful, powerful thing to process. >> and we know that even, obviously, people who are most directly involved are going to having the highest impact and greatest impact on them. but, yeah, you are right. the people more remote that have been watching it, learning about it, talking about it, there have been studies on this and find that there is a component of post-traumatic stress even in those populations. we are talking about children here. we typically think about post-traumatic stress in adults. but even after virginia tech, for example, after a few months later, 15% of people who were involved -- went to colleges, who -- watched this very closely, still had some component of it. 77% of students at virginia tech had it. obviously much higher in the people most -- >> 77%? >> three to four months later. it is significant. there's a couple of things to keep in mind. one is that the quicker some of those symptoms and signs are recognized and dealt with, the much better prognosis people have.

winter here, that they were planning on moving, that she thought about possibly going to washington state, possibly enrolling her son in a college there. we've been able to trace a little bit of his academic history, wolf. we can tell you, right now, there is no known connection to the sandy hook elementary school. he first appears in public records as a freshman in high school back in 2007, and at that time, we spoke to a security director, who said that adam lanza immediately was identified as a child that needed to be watched. not because he was a threat to other people, that he was so gawky and so awkward that security officials felt that others may be a threat to him. so not only did they keep an eye on him, but also he was, at that time, assigned a school psychologist. he left that school in about 2008. he enrolled in classes at a nearby university, just about 15 minutes from here. he was taking computer science, macro economic, american history. this is a 16-year-old kid, mind you, he was taking those classes. in 2009, he just fell off the grid, never went back to the school. he to

mcdonald, a senior washington correspondent for cbc news off the canada. yet another national discussion about guns is under way, and it's so anti-rational, so politically cowardly, so unbearably stupid, that you have to wonder how a nation that has enlightened the world in so many other ways could wallow in this kind of discussion. does this target the united states' image in the eyes of many who look at this and say, really? another gun discussion? >> of course it does, and it does for appropriate reasons. i've been listening to some of the commentary, and you know, we keep talking about the evil of this person and the psychology and, you know, maybe the violence in the culture. all that could explain any one instance. it cannot explain the fact that, as i say, we have 15 times as much gun violence as other countries. we have to be willing to confront the reality that we're way out of line here, and we have something to learn from other people. >> all right. got to take a real critical look at our culture here in the united states. thanks, fareed. really appreciate it. >> re

if anything to make schools safer and more secure. chief washington correspondent james rosen is taking a closer look at this for us today. >> reporter: across the country educators and add minimum straeurts are strivin administrators, are trying to tell parents their schools are safe. measures being adopted this morning extend across the public and private school continuum with school psychologists and counselors bracing for questions and guidance sessions. security officers are talking with local police and procedures for safety drills are being revisited. one concurrent theme is that teaches, principals and other authority figures seem reluctant to raise newton with students of their own. a message went oupbt in florida quote, please know that school staff members will be available to speak to individual students should any of them need anyone to talk to. we will not be bringing up this latest tragedy in our classrooms or conversations, but we will be there for our students to listen if they have concerns about safety at our school, unquote. here is a similar message that i received
